In what is Catholicism based?

Imagine Christianity as a tree. Catholicism is the root of that tree. With orthodox being the trunk and the protestant religions being the myriad branches and leaves. Catholicism is the original Christianity. All other denominations are off shoots of it. Without the root there would be no tree.
