Tmobile text not available for service plan?

whenever i try to text to like a 5 digit number, i always get a text back saying that service is unavailable for my current service plan. why does this happen? it's usually when i try to text like to a radio station, or on a skittles wrapper you could text your code to 73876. but it never works. does anyone know why?
