Do I Have To Follow Building Code?

If I am planning to build my own home in which only myself and my family will dwell in, Do I have to follow building code? I'm not planning on doing anything stupid like making my fireplace out of cardboard or having 4'-3" ceiling heights, I'm jsut wondering if I have to have the proper amount of glazing per room, proper stair design, etc.
