Were Bull-and-Terriers (predecessors to Bull Terriers) the original designer dogs?Good example to use?

a similar breed would be a jack russel which at one point was on the verge of becoming a reconised breed but cus they still come in all shapes and sizes only the parson jack russel can be reconised.
